Sold! (Well, kind of...)
Interesting snippet in the Guardian's technology pages today:
Is a phone sold when it's on a boat? Or does it have to be in a customer's hand? With the iPhone 3G, perhaps either counts.
July 15, 2008 3:14 PM

As the Fortune 2.0 blog notes,
In a report to clients issued a few hours before Apple’s announcement, [Gene] Munster [of analysts Piper Jaffray, who follows Apple closely] had estimated that Apple had sold about 425,000 iPhones worldwide and that it would take Apple at least 17 days to hit the one million mark.
But instead the magic number came up in just three days. How's that happen, then?
One explanation for the discrepancy may have to do with how Apple counts sales. Sales at Apple Stores are recorded at the register. But sales to its partners — in this case, AT&T and the overseas carriers — are recorded when the devices leave the loading docks in Asia. In other words, some of those 1 million iPhones recorded as sold by Apple (AAPL) may still be in transit.

Indeed, Munster makes the same point in a revised report issued to clients later Monday morning.
But certainly Apple's sales were gigantically faster this time round, as Munster explained: "The improvement is driven by two key factors: 1) international availablilty in 21 countries, and 2) a 60% lower entry-level price point." No argument there. But we'd really like to see some solid numbers from O2 and other partners.
I'm particularly interested to know how many were supplied to (and sold in) the UK. The web seems fairly unsure about it; I've seen numbers as low as 18,000 supplied for the launch (including Carphone Warehouse stores) and numbers as high as 78,000. Certainly, however, no more than 40% of the number that expressed interest via the O2 website weeks in advance of the launch.

I've actually now had a chance to play on one, by the way - one of my colleagues at work got one on the launch date; found out yesterday and had a play on it for ten minutes... It's very nice, and despite the stories about lousy battery life (my colleague said he's found it no worse than the previous model) and lack of facilities like no MMS and not that good a camera... I want one so bad it's not true.

i love mine. wasn't connected until today which i was beginning to get narked about, but now it works properly i'm a very happy bunny. battery life appears to be all day with a charge overnight. not ideal but it does do one hell of a lot of stuff. i guess you don't need mms if you can just email pictures!

I probably won't be able to have one for another month or so (see previous messages) but I can live with having to charge it every night.

I am slightly irritated that I won't be able to receive MMS, but again, I can live with that.

well of course the charging every night works best of you actually switch the socket on. Doh!

Yeh receiving pictures would be nice but the phone itself more than makes up for it :) the games are awesome and I'm not a gaming person and only got free ones. For someone with a real and important job like you the constant contact with email is great too.

Hope the o2 fairy brings one soon! How have you found them as a provider? I'm unconvinced so far!

iPhone/Shipping

Items being counted as 'sold' the minute the ship is an old trick that's been used in some industries for a long time. "If it's out the door, it's sold!" was how one businessman used to speak to me about it. Strange he never spoke about the returns...

And you can't receive MMS on the phone? WTF? Is that another one of those things were Apple basically looked at the (poor) US market and thought 'if America doesn't do it, no one needs it?' (after all, parts of the iPhone - mostly the actual phone parts - are quite old-school when you compare them to other phones. I mean when was the last time a phone came out that couldn't do MMS?)

I receive a lot of pictures this way so that could actually be a deal breaker of sorts.

So what happens when you are sent a MMS? Does it send you a website link or something?

Re: iPhone/Shipping

I've absolutely no idea what happens when you're sent an MMS. I do know that there's a workaround for sending MMS's, but no idea about receiving them.

Oh, there's loads that's not quite right with the iPhone: no MMS, as we've said; a relatively crappy camera (2mp, no autofocus, no flash); no SMS forwarding, not very good battery life apparently; no video recording and no cut and paste (!)

Don't care- still want one.

Re: iPhone/Shipping

Holy Fnord, no wonder the n95 comes out better on everything!

Except, of course, a touch screen, but hey. I'd only end up texting my entire address book at 3am again, which at least I haven't managed with the Nokia...

MMS

McGill here - I've seen a lot of people say 'why MMS if you can email' but that falls into the tech supremist trick of 'I want everyone to be on the same device, doing the same thing' and it's a bit arrogant of Apple as well not to include it as the vast majority of people MMS instead of email - partially because it's cheaper, but also because up until now it's been easier - and I know people now instinctively send MMS all over the place.

I'm glad someone pointed this out as it's a bit of a dealbreaker. Not getting one until the next revision though, so hope it's fixed by then...

Sounds like the way the music charts work. The record company sends out a few million copies of the album and single to affiliated radio stations across the country, as well as magazines, TV shows ect. Then those promotional copies are counted as sales for chart purposes. The first Australian Idol winner actually went platinum before his album was available to the public, for example.
