"I know you're outer-directed, honey, but get a grip," says Delia. "Now, I have a house to clean."

Thus, this morning, as I obsessed (again) over what I would read next Tuesday at our big 20th Anniversary NYRSF Reading at South Street Seaport (hosted by old friend Claire Wolf Smith, whose LJ Identity I will leave to her to reveal in these pages as she chooses). Should I do the joint reading of The Man with the Knives, with Delia reading Sophia's p.o.v. sections, and me doing Alec's interior monologues? We read through it on Sunday, and it's awfully dense language & text (plus, her part is longer than mine! And I get all the difficult poetryish bits). I haven't even sold it yet (it's out right now with an Exclusive anthology), so it won't be appearing for months, if not years. Is this a horrible tease? Or a Rare Treat? If I promise to do an unpublished Riverside story, but I chicken out at the last minute, will you be content with "The Duke of Riverside" instead (sold to Ellen Datlow's CITIES for 2010), even if I can't read the whole thing 'cause it's too long? (Or can I take 45 minutes to read 1 story?) Or would you rather hear something you've already read? I think that it was ca. 20 yrs ago (agh!!) that I first read "The Swordsman whose Name was Not Death" at NYRSF - Jim Freund says he still has the tape - would it be fun to hear that now?

My divine chiropractor, George Russell, says Go For It - he is an astute reader with a prodigious memory who, as he worked the knots out of my legs, suggested various scenes from TPOTS which, in fact, are the very ones I usually read aloud to audiences (he also remarked, "I think Marcus is transexual" - well, whatever that term is for someone who's not committed either way). I adore George. If you're a writer in NYC whose body hurts (Don't all jump up & down at once!), call him. And/or try this Ergociser program [info]maryrobinette tweeted me about.

OK, I should probably STFU and leave well alone, but it's been bugging me a bit. I know feelings run high on this one, but ... well, I've never ducked less popular opinions before.

I see that, thankfully IMHO, the attempt to get goth-bashing added to the UK's hate crime legislation has failed. Good. As I've said before, I find it more than a little disrespectful of all that the protected groups (race, sexuality, disability, religion) have suffered to conflate attacks on people from different social and cultural groupings with the far greater - and on-going problems - of e.g. race-related violence. I also don't see how a line could be drawn between goth-bashing (I'm using this a general term: read emo-, skater-, hippy-bashing or others as appropriate) and, say, Millwall vs Spurs fans violence, or Angels vs Outlaws (bikers), or school 1 vs school 2. Hate crime legislation is far from uncontroversial, and if it is going to serve any purpose then it has to be moderately narrowly defined, with good historical reasons. At its root, almost all violence is "hate" based. Some energy might be better directed towards tougher sentences for violent crimes all round; except for some people in our scene that might be moving a bit out of their normal liberal political sphere.

Or maybe not. I was on a S.O.P.H.I.E. facebook group the other day (here), and I was gob-smacked at some of what I was reading. Maybe I'm just loosing touch, but back in the day there was a bit of a premium placed on goths being quite well-read, often progressively thinking, and so on. But I've never seen a concentration of Daily Mail-esque "flog 'em and hang 'em high" like on the comments on that group within an alternative setting before. Sure, the Sun or Mail comment boards, but not in our community, surely? I've always said that goths were very small-c conservative, but it looks like we've got growing numbers of big-c ones, or worse (anyone know any "out" UKIPers?).

Now, people are entitled to have their view on capital punishment, and I can see how having a friend murdered might colour someone's views. But I've had two friends murdered in the last 28 months, and I'm still bang against it, and ready to argue the toss with anyone about it. I would have thought that even a cursory glance at the recent history of UK justice would be all that would be needed to see why it certainly wouldn't be a good idea here, let alone any arguments about fundamental human rights.

Anyways, rant off. Anyone want to tell me why capital punishment is a good thing, and why they will be voting Tory, UKIP or BNP? G'wan g'wan g'wan.

Idina Menzel “Would Love To” Guest As ‘Glee’ Mom

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A piece of the most perfect casting in TV history just might come to be: Tony winner Idina Menzel is game to get her mom on as the birth mother of ‘Glee‘ songbird Rachel.

“I know that she would love that,” Menzel’s real-life husband, Taye Diggs told Fancast during an interview promoting the explosive double episode of ‘Private Practice‘ airing this Thursday. Acknowledging the ladies’ resemblance, he agreed such casting “would be awesome.”

‘Glee’ fans have been lobbying for Menzel to guest-star as Lea Michele’s look-alike on-screen mom - or any other relative - ever since the Fox series premiered. That campaign only swelled after Rachel performed “Defying Gravity,” Menzel’s showstopping number from Broadway’s “Wicked,” in a recent episode.

Diggs says that because his wife and Michele both are Broadway babies of slightly different generations, “They know each other, so we knew that [resemblance] existed far, far before the TV world did.”

Helping this dream casting along even further is the fact that the two superb songstresses “are fans of each other.” Diggs points out that he and Menzel caught Michele during her run in “Spring Awakening.”

Diggs says he and Menzel TiVo ‘Glee’ every week - likely giving priority to ABC’s own hit Wednesday comedy, “Modern Family‘! - and since they both hail from the stage, “We are just so happy to see a lot of these theater kids [like Michele] get the opportunity to do some television work.”

The talented ‘Glee’ cast is “doing a really great job,” he adds, “and I hope some more will follow.”

Source.

I'd be game for this too, tbh. I know lots of people were campaigning for this from the start, so it's pretty cool to finally get word that she would be all for it.

My lord, has it really been FIVE YEARS since the beyond senseless murder of metal guitar god Dimebag Darrell? The music community was rocked to its core this month in 2004 when a deranged “fan” shot and killed Pantera guitarist “Dimebag/Diamond” Darrell Abbott (along with 3 others) in a Columbus, Ohio, music club while performing with then-current band Damageplan.

In recognizing this tragic event’s 5-year anniversary, Revolver magazine is doing a cover feature in tribute to the accomplished and widely admired guitar legend (of which you can count your Reverend a fan). Of special note to comic book fans is the talent responsible for the original cover to this issue, graphic artist Tim Bradstreet. Along with work on the Punisher, readers are likely familiar with his lengthy run of covers of Vertigo’s Hellblazer series.

From Revolver’s press release:

REVOLVER Magazine has teamed with renowned and award-winning graphic illustrator Tim Bradstreet (The Punisher, Hellblazer, “Vampire: The Masquerade”) for a Pantera Vulgar Display Of Power commemorative issue, celebrating guitarist Dimebag Darrell on the fifth anniversary of his death. The issue–available only on newsstands from December 22 through February 22–captures the defining moment in Pantera’s career and features Bradstreet’s stark and powerful cover illustration of the classic 1992 album cover photo.

The REVOLVER Vulgar Display Of Power issue includes an additional Pantera illustration by Bradstreet, rare photos, as well as exclusive interviews with all surviving Pantera band members (Phil Anselmo, Vinnie Paul, Rex Brown); Dime’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney; album producer Terry Date; musicians Rob Halford, Rob Zombie, Sean Yseult, Scott Ian, Zakk Wylde, Nick Bowcott; and other key friends and associates. In fact, this marks the first piece to include interviews with both Phil Anselmo and Vinnie Paul since the 2006 VH1 “Behind The Music” on Pantera.

In this issue, REVOLVER Magazine and writer Jon Wiederhorn debunk the myth behind the Vulgar Display Of Power album cover photo shoot and reveal the stories behind how “Diamond Darrell” became “Dimebag Darrell” and the origins of Dime’s signature “Black Tooth Grin” drink.

Each newsstand copy of REVOLVER’s Vulgar Display Of Power issue will include a special memorabilia pack with an authentic replica of a Vulgar Display Of Power tour backstage laminate and concert ticket, a Pantera show flyer, and sticker. In addition, REVOLVER will give away Tim Bradstreet’s original hand-drawn cover art for the issue, an Affliction Pantera Signature Series T-shirt, Dean Dimebag Dimebonics ML Electric Guitar with Case, Dunlop MXR DD11 Dime Distortion Pedal and DB01 Dimebag Signature Wah Pedal, Seymour Duncan Dimebucker Pickup, and ddrum Vinnie Paul Signature Snare. Look for contest details in this issue and enter online at www.REVOLVERmag.com.

Fans can also purchase a highly limited-edition (only 250 printed) Vulgar Display of Power Commemorative T-shirt featuring Bradstreet’s cover illustration at www.REVOLVERmag.com/store.

Warner Bros to Announce Batman 3 in January

The speculation over the long developing sequel to The Dark Knight, has calmed down over the past couple of months. Mostly due to the fact that Christopher Nolan has been working on his latest film Inception, which is currently in post production. But, a “reliable source” over at batman-on-film.net, says that Warner Bros. will soon make a big announcement regarding the future of the Caped Crusader.

Warner Brothers along with Christopher Nolan, are set to make an announcement over the next installment of the successful Batman franchise in January 2010.
After months of speculation, comments from Gary Oldman at Comic Con and of course, the endless list of quotes from Sir Michael Caine about the number of possible villains for the sequel, this should give Batman fans everywhere a decent amount of closure.

The only downside to this rumor, is a recent interview from Caine (again!) stating that Batman 3 won’t happen for the next couple of years, so now we’re completely confused about the film’s status. We’ll just have to sit pretty and wait until next year to figure out what the hell’s going on with the series.

For the Salt Lake City locals or anyone in town tomorrow night, Thursday, December 3, I'll be joining several other local authors at the King's English Bookshop for their annual Holiday Celebration. Stop by and say hi or SUCK IT or MY LORD YOUR CHIN IS HUGE. I'll be there signing books and mingling from 5:30 until 7PM (looks like they changed the time a bit). Sadly, they will not let me bring the dogs. But Jon and his beard will be there by my side. I'm bringing him so that I have someone to blame for my farts. HA. FART JOKE. CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE THE FUN WE ARE GOING TO HAVE.

Over Thanksgiving I pretty much abandoned any hope of eating properly and was going to give myself a "free pass" for a possible weight gain ...

After weighing in today .. I lost 4 lbs. I'm not sure how .. as I was a gluttonus pig this weekend .. but there you have it.

That makes a total 14 lbs gone from my weight in September, when I really started this kick.

It also puts me squarely back on track to hit my end-of-year goal weight.

This pleases me greatly.

Book 124: A Spectacle of Corruption (Benjamin Weaver Book 2)
Author: David Liss, 2004
Genre: Historical Murder Mystery. 18th century England
Other Details: Paperback, 392 pages.

Since the publication of the first volume of my memoirs, I have found myself the subject of more notoriety than I had ever known or might have anticipated.... - Benjamin Weaver.

After enjoying A Conspiracy of Paper (my 2009 Book 91) so much I was pleased to to find that David Liss had written further novels featuring former pugilist turned thief-taker, Benjamin Weaver.

The novel opens with Weaver being convicted for a murder he did not commit at a trial presided over by a judge who appears determined to find him guilty. Then he is accosted by a stranger who manages to slip a lock pick and file into his hands. In that instant he is aware of two things: someone had gone to a great deal of trouble to see him condemned to hang and another equally mysterious agent was determined to see him free. After a daring escape from London's most notorious prison Weaver has to find a way to clear his name and soon stumbles into a conspiracy with wide ramifications for the future of Britain.

Weaver is such a wonderfully complex character; intelligent, charming and witty addressing his readers with the hindsight of several decades on these events. The central mystery is labyrinthine and well played out. Liss populates the book with colourful characters who could easily have stepped out of William Hogarth's prints. Again, Liss does a superb job with the setting evoking the glamour and squalor of the Georgian period. He also tackles the complexities of 18th century politics and the electoral processes by using Weaver whose introduction into these matters also serves as the reader's induction.

This is historical fiction at its best. I loved it from start to finish and can hardly wait for the third in the series to appear in paperback!

I was going to spend the last few hours of today sitting down and writing an LJ post -- okay, well, maybe not hours, but you know how it is -- when BossBoss called me. He comes back in to work tomorrow, and he had a project he wanted to give me to work on while he was gone. In other words, two weeks ago, he forgot to give me a project he thought would take, oh, about two weeks.

Can I get it done by the time he's settled in tomorrow morning? NO PROBLEM, BOSS.

The nice thing about working this job is that people have no clue how long it takes me to do things. A two-week Space Allocation survey would probably actually take an unprepared person, oh, maybe a day. I'm eternally prepared, so it took me forty minutes to do half of it, during which Coworker Fail swore left right and sideways about having to print the documents for me to use. So I just used the digital copies, and now Coworker Fail is swearing about having to do his half of it. Which I would happily do, now that it's down to a SYSTEM!, except that he insists on doing it himself.

ANYWAY. I HAVE RECCS FOR YOU. And now I get to share them, while he whines.

First, [info]kath_ballantyne and [info]non_sequential have opened [info]tw_canvas, a place to post fanart and other artsy things that are Torchwood- and Doctor Who-related. It looks great!

Second, [info]velvet_mace posted a really fantastic analysis of why "bad" fanfic can be popular and gratifying. It is one of the most awesome graphs I've ever seen. She posted it in May and I'm just now finding out about it, so maybe everyone's already seen it or something, but it's definitely deserving of a look if you haven't. There's some cool meta in comments, too.

ETA: The image isn't showing up for some reason. She's aware of the problem, so please don't comment that you can't see it, she's got a few of those already. It's LJ Gremlins of some sort. Patience will no doubt be rewarded.

As always, if you visit these places, play nicely; I'm responsible for you and you have the Cafe's reputation to uphold. :D

A list of the most-watched TV episodes of the decade reads like an exercise in nostalgia. Not one telecast aired after 2006. With the increasingly fractured TV universe, we probably won't see a list quite like this again.

Here are the Top 10 TV series episodes since 2000:

10. "Spin City"
Airdate: May 24, 2000
Viewers: 32.8 million

Yes, we were surprised, too -- and it's not for the series finale. This was the final episode starring Michael J. Fox, who left the show because of his worsening Parkinson's symptoms. Charlie Sheen took the lead role for two more "Spins" seasons, though Fox had a brief return in the final year.

9. "Everybody Loves Raymond"
Airdate: May 16, 2005
Viewers: 32.9 million

The series finale for Ray Romano's long-running sitcom went off the air as a top 10-ranked show among total viewers. The episode was only subtly climatic, with Ray Barone's routine surgery resulting in a moment where his family thought he might have died. The episode concluded with the Barones talking and laughing around the dinner table.

8. "Frasier"
Airdate: May 18, 2000
Viewers: 33.7 million

The seventh-season finale of "Cheers" spinoff "Fraiser" promised to end the suspense over Niles Crane's swooning over physical therapist Daphne Moon. Niles confesses his love for Daphne on the eve of her wedding, only to be rejected ... or so it seemed at first.

House hottie Olivia Wilde strikes a pose in a Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti satin dress on the January 2010 cover of Lucky Magazine, on stands December 8. Here’s what the 25-year-old L.A.-based actress opened up about:
On her fashion alter ego: “I find myself constantly pretending I’m a chic Parisian. I even dream of buying a Balmain jacket with really sharp shoulders. If I can pull off that look, I will have succeeded, at least partially, in my quest.”
On her favorite bargain haunt: “Coats from H&M are inexpensive and usually have something extra going on—so even with a simple sheath dress, your outfit is still interesting.”

It's freezing here in Phoenix! I woke up this morning and it was 40 degrees! I didn't know what to do with myself; I can barely get out of bed! It's nice, though, being able to wear my coats and boots without feeling like a complete idiot. That's why I figured that I had better make some stew while the weather lasts, as I'm sure it will be back in the 80s in a few weeks. I've made stew with beer and stew with wine before, but never a stew with both beer and wine. It's really a brilliant idea. The broth in this stew is full of rich flavors that completely satisfy along with the tender meat that melts in your mouth and the flavorful root vegetables that everyone loves. I had to use Guinness, of course, because what's a stew without it? Kramer and I ate this as leftovers for a few days and it just kept getting better and better, so it's a perfect meal for a big family or even just two people! Jay-Z claims he's "the new Sinatra" in the hit song also, but does the Hoboken-native Frankie still hold the title for the city's anthem? Either way, the nation loves their catchy hit tunes! Purveyors of top quality Christian snark since before I discovered the internet, Ship of Fools is a reliably cheery place, even when actual Christian news is utterly depressing. The best bits:

- the Mystery Worshipper. When bored I trawl it for churches I've actually been to.
- the caption competition. Not quite so good as the Church Times one, because not so Anglican, and they don't display so many good entries, but still fun.
- Gadgets for God - known to the discerning as Tat. And oh boy, is it. Which reminds me. I have obtained a sheet of holographic religious stickers. They are dire. I have never seen anything so tacky in my life, and I'm speaking as someone who owns a glitter-encrusted figurine of the Virgin Mary made out of lava from Mount Etna (allegedly). I don't really know what I'm going to do with them - maybe stick them on pieces of card and send them to people who will appreciate them: Lord Hobbs of Mardonia, Blessed Richard of the Thurible, my father, [info - personal] tree_and_leaf, the Arch Villain, etc. If you feel that your life is incomplete without a picture of Our Lord pointing to his (flashing) Sacred Heart, or one of Mary, who looks at you when you move the page, leave a (screened) comment indicating where I am to send it.

Ahem. Digression. I apologise. Anyway, it is a jolly good site, being populated by people who don't take their faith too seriously.

As ever, I shan't do Christmas cards for my friends list (specially requested tacky stickers excepted, of course), because to my mind Christmas cards are for a) wishing people a happy Christmas, which I can do perfectly well online; and b) sharing news with people whom I haven't seen for a while and therefore aren't up to date with what's going on in my life - which you lot are. Anyway, it's far too early to think about Christmas. We have almost all of Advent left to go, and I shall therefore prod you in the direction of [info]countertony's Advent calendar, where you may marvel (once he puts up something beyond O come, O come, Emmanuel, anyway) at his complete lack of taste. It is not that he has bad taste; he simply has no taste whatsoever. Which compensates for my snobbery, so it all evens out. My own thoughts on O come, O come, Emmanuel can be found at [info - personal] ancientandmodern, which I shall update every Sunday as per usual.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Here's a pilot casting that is sure to get fans of "Heroes" buzzing.

The show's Sendhil Ramamurthy has joined NBC's comedic drama pilot "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer" as a regular.

Jane Curtin also has been cast in the pilot, which stars David Tennant as Rex Alexander, a top Chicago litigator who begins suffering panic attacks and starts coaching clients to represent themselves in court.

Ramamurthy will play an ambitious but good-natured lawyer who was in Rex's shadow until Rex's career switch and whose friendship with Rex becomes complicated when he falls in love with his pal's fiancee (Abigail Spencer).

For Ramamurthy, the casting is in second position to "Heroes." But, given that both shows are at the same network, it's safe to assume that Ramamurthy would be free to do "Rex" should the pilot be picked up as a series for next season. (Note Elizabeth Mitchell's casting as a "guest star" as the lead in the pilot for ABC's "FlashForward" last season while she was still on the network's "Lost.")

Ramamurthy's character on "Heroes," Mohinder Suresh, was key in the series' first couple of seasons, but his importance has gradually been scaled down. He has appeared in three episodes so far this season.

As for Emmy-winning comedy veteran Curtin, she will play Rex's mother and mentor, a successful law professor who falls in love with Rex's shrink (Jeffrey Tambor).

David Semel is directing the pilot from a script by Andrew Leeds and David Lampson.

krampbel

Here's the Belsnickle I promised Benito from weeks back.
I kept meaning to color it.

I threw in a bonus Krampus, since they're kind of related...
